Backend Development
Backend services in TypeScript and Node.js, built to be operated rather than just shipped.
Most backend work I take on is not a greenfield API. It is a service that already has users, already has a database with real data in it, and already has behaviour that other systems depend on. The constraint that matters is not how quickly a new endpoint can be written — it is changing what is there without breaking the things quietly relying on it.
That shapes how I work: establish what the current inputs, outputs and failure modes actually are before changing them, keep API contracts stable unless a break is agreed in advance, and put migrations behind a rollback plan.
Typical engagements
- Designing and building REST APIs in TypeScript and Node.js
- Integrating a system with external services and handling their failure modes
- Database schema design, and migrations on tables that already hold production data
- Taking over a backend someone else wrote and making it safe to change

Is this a fit?
- A good fit: business systems, backends and APIs, GCP and AWS infrastructure, production incidents.
- Not the right fit: work that is mainly pixel-perfect UI or heavy animation.
